Thinking About Traveling the World and Training Martial Arts?

"Sensei, I think I want to try martial arts and see the world. Can you show me how?"
I've heard versions of this question from so many people, and it always takes me back to my own journey. By the time I was 29, I had traveled to over 32 countries, always with a duffel bag, my gear, and an open mind. This lifestyle has become my calling, my joy, my never-ending adventure. Martial arts became my passport, and the world? My dojo.

There’s something truly exhilarating about living without a set destination—waking up one morning in one country and finding myself in another the next. From age 23, I chose to live like a pirate, free to explore, adapt, and conquer each new place and challenge. And honestly? I’m still living that way, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Traveling for martial arts has taught me about myself and about what it means to live a life of exploration, not just in new places but within myself.

1. The Adventure of Discovery

Every place I’ve visited has had something unique to teach me. Traveling to train in martial arts goes beyond finding the best gyms or meeting skilled fighters. It’s about immersing yourself in a new culture, adapting to different rhythms, and becoming part of a world bigger than yourself. Sometimes, I don’t know where my next meal or bed will be, but that’s part of the fun. When you let go of the need for every little detail to be planned, you start discovering a side of yourself that’s resilient, adaptable, and adventurous.

2. Embracing the Unknown

So many people hesitate over that one trip they dream of—the place that’s been calling their name for years. My advice? Just go. Pack your bag, lace up your shoes, and take the leap. There’s nothing quite like stepping into the unknown on your own. Solo travel has a magic to it; it forces you to rely on yourself, enjoy your own company, and appreciate the journey without distractions. Whether you’re exploring a bustling city or a quiet village, you’ll find peace and confidence in hanging out with yourself.

3. Finding Strength and Growth Through Martial Arts Abroad

Training martial arts worldwide, I’ve had the chance to learn from masters in Thailand, Japan, Brazil, and countless other places. Each has its own approach, wisdom, and tradition. Whether it’s Muay Thai in Bangkok or Jiu-Jitsu in Rio, the power of martial arts lies in its universality. Every culture brings something different to the table, and you learn to adapt and grow with each new lesson. I’ve been humbled, challenged, and empowered in ways that have shaped me as a fighter and as a person. The friendships formed on the mats in each country? Those are bonds that last a lifetime.

4. Living a Life of Purpose and Joy

Traveling and training worldwide isn’t just a lifestyle; it’s a purpose and a joy. You find a rhythm that’s different from the nine-to-five grind. For me, life is about seeing the world, learning from each corner of it, and leaving a little piece of myself in each place I visit. There’s beauty in living life with a bit of a pirate spirit—a choice to embrace freedom, to roam, and to live fully in the present.

5. Take That First Step—It’ll Change You Forever

If you’ve been dreaming about taking that big trip, let this be your sign. Go explore and discover new, exciting things about the world and about yourself. Don’t wait for the “perfect time” or the right travel buddies. Take that leap, even if you have to go alone. Traveling solo teaches you so much about who you are, and honestly? It’s a gift to experience your own company, to laugh with yourself, and to take on the world one place at a time.

So, if you’re ready to experience life outside your comfort zone and discover what you’re capable of—pack your bag, set your spirit free, and take that first step into the unknown. The world is waiting for you.
