Karate Combat’s Groundbreaking Heavyweight Tournament and Star-Studded Title Weekend
Karate Combat and its first-ever 8-man heavyweight tournament was absolutely wild! This wasn’t just another fight night—it was a historic showcase that reminded fans why KC continues to separate itself from every other fight promotion. From the action to the atmosphere, it was pure combat spectacle.
The 8-man heavyweight tournament was a rare occasion, and KC went all out. We saw giants from across the globe—massive men built like tanks and known for ending fights within seconds of the opening bell. These weren’t just brawlers; these were titans. Some of the most dangerous men on the planet squared off in the pit, and the intensity was almost hard to watch, even for me—and I’m an active Karate Combat fighter currently competing in the 165-pound division.
To be honest, after watching what went down that night, I’m more inspired than ever to stay at 165. The shots those heavyweights were throwing and eating would have crumpled most men. One fighter took a shot so vicious that he started stumbling and blinking like something short-circuited. The whole crowd held their breath, wondering if he could continue. Amazingly, he survived the round. He didn’t win, but he walked out of there, and for that, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
The entire scene felt like a live-action monster movie—a real battle royale of Kaijus. Think Godzilla vs. King Kong, but in a pit with real consequences. The sound of fists landing echoed like thunderclaps, and being pitside with a front-row view, I can honestly say I felt those punches in my chest.
Ultimately, it was Robelis “Big Boy” Despaigne who came out victorious. This Cuban powerhouse was the tournament favorite coming in, and he didn’t disappoint. He plowed through the bracket and claimed the tournament crown—but not without cost. He reportedly broke both hands and his right foot on his road to victory. Still, he fought through it, showed true grit, and made his homeland of Cuba proud.
Now, Big Boy sets his sights on the reigning heavyweight champion, “Smiling” Sam Alvey, in what promises to be an explosive title fight. That clash is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated fights in KC history.
But the night wasn’t done. In the co-main event, Artur “Makako” Vergara defended his 135-pound title in dominant fashion and was officially crowned the King of Miami. Makako’s speed, timing, and showmanship once again proved why he’s such a fan favorite. He’s not just a champion—he’s an entertainer through and through.
The action didn’t stop there. The following night, KC welcomed a huge turnout for their Saturday showcase, which featured even more fireworks. The crowd was buzzing with excitement for special guests Paige VanZant and UFC legend Alex Pereira, who was there to corner his younger sister, Aline Pereira.
And Aline did not disappoint. She put on a striking clinic, showing poise and precision far beyond her experience. With Alex in her corner, she fought like a seasoned pro and walked away with the women's division title, making the Pereira family even more dangerous than they already were.
Karate Combat once again proved why it’s one of the most exciting and innovative combat sports organizations on the planet. Between its cinematic production, unique pit setting, and a roster filled with elite and entertaining fighters, KC is pushing the boundaries of what fight nights should feel like.
This past weekend was more than just fights—it was an event. A celebration of martial arts. A gathering of global talent, legends, influencers, and fans who love the raw intensity of combat. And it reminded all of us—especially those of us still fighting in the pit—why we love this sport.
Keep your eyes on Big Boy vs. Smiling Sam, and don’t blink—Karate Combat’s just getting started.
